Updated : Oct 14, 2025

90's kids have one nostalgic memory of coming from schools, colleges and watching MTV, for new and stylish songs. While some children watched MTV, secretly, without their parents permission, many got to know about the new music trends and Indian music has benefitted largely with the revolution MTV has brought in.

Further, MTV Roadies has brought in huge cultural change as well in Indian satellite broadcast. The channel has brought in reality televison shows trend as well in the country. Now, Paramount Global has confirmed the permanent closure of five dedicated MTV music channels, including MTV Music, MTV 80s, and MTV Live, by the end of 2025.

The channels will stop telecasts from 31st December 2025. This decision underscores a fundamental shift in global media consumption and is part of the corporation's strategic cost-reduction initiative. The closures, which will affect markets from the UK to Brazil, are a direct response to declining linear television viewership.

Audiences have overwhelmingly migrated to on-demand platforms like YouTube, TikTok, and Spotify for music discovery and video consumption, rendering traditional 24-hour music channels financially unsustainable. While the flagship MTV channel remains on air, its focus continues to be reality and entertainment programming, far removed from its music-centric roots.

The brand's future presence will pivot heavily to its streaming service, Paramount+, and its social media channels. The shutdown marks the final chapter of MTV’s decades-long transformation, emphasizing the necessity for media giants to aggressively adapt to the digital-first landscape.
